[Due to Austria being busy this time of year, Roderich has decided to list them all up to the 1st January 2013! Everyone is free to come alone since he'll be there for most of them!]

O C T O B E R    E V E N T S



1st ONWARDS: MUSEUM ART SHOWING.
:bulletred: Palais Liechtenstein in Vienna's Alsergrund district will be showing previously unseen works of art from October. The new pictures on display include a look at some of the early German and Dutch painting as well as furniture from Vienna.

17TH OCTOBER: VIENNA AUCTION AND UNKNOWN UNDERGROUND EXHIBITION.
:bulletred: The chance to own the earliest recorded image of the 260-year-old London landmark that was a backdrop to the Olympic beach volleyball games is being offered by a Vienna auction house. he image of the New Horse Guards building taken from St. James's Park and painted by Venetian master Canaletto is very similar to a painting snapped up by Andrew Lloyd Webber for a cool 9 million GBP. This is on sale for 2million GBP or 3million Euros!
:bulletred: While most people come to Vienna to admire the stunning architectural and scenery above ground, a tour of the city's underground passageways, burial crypts and cellars offers a fascinating insight into the other side of the city. A tour entitled 'Unknown Underground Vienna' takes place every week, and includes the crypts of St Michael's Church, and the historic cellars of Michaelerplatz, amongst other sites.

19TH OCTOBER: VIVALDI: THE FOUR SEASONS.
:bulletred: Enjoy Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" at the one of the most famous churches in Vienna - the St. Charles Church (Karlskirche). The St. Charles Church was completed in 1737. Three years later Antonio Vivaldi had moved to Vienna. Being a priest, he surely admired this brand new extraordinary sacred builing. The church's architecture, which is highly appreciated today, must have seemed very impressive and unusual to people of the 18th century.

21ST OCTOBER: HOME MOVIE DAY.
:bulletred: The chance for home movies to make the big screen is being offered at the Vienna Library on October 21st. With the advent of smaller film formats in the early 1920s, amateur film-making became established as an independent and widespread cultural practice. Films shot by private citizens are now seen as an important element of visual history: not just content-wise as historical documents but also due to their specific approach to the medium.

OCTOBER 26TH-28TH: F.I.S WORLD SKI CUP OPENING.
:bulletred: From 26th to 28th October, Sölden in Tirol will be hosting the ultimate FIS Ski World Cup Races. Like every year, the women's giant slalom opens the new World Cup season. Catch the Glacier buses up to the slopes to watch the worlds best woman and men skiers!

1ST TO THE 1OTH NOVEMBER: FLAMENCO DANCE FESTIVAL.
:bulletred: Dance is art. This festival begins with a contemporary dance programme in June, followed by the art of flamenco in November. Join in or watch the legendary dancers in Dornbirn!

5TH NOVEMBER: BONFIRE NIGHT CELEBRATIONS
:bulletred: Members of the English community in and around Vienna need not miss out on the traditional Bonfire Night festivities as a special fire and fireworks night will be held just outside Vienna near the Shopping City Süd (SCS). Food, drink and sparklers will be available, and the organisers promise "a great time for all!"

9TH TO THE 11TH NOVEMBER: O'NEILL PLEASURE JAM.
:bulletred: The Dachstein glacier becomes sweet spot once again for the crème de la crème of the international snowboard elite at the O'Neill Pleasure Jam! Heaps of side-events will accompany the 2-day contest, and there will be no lack of smashing parties. With snow, sun and woman, come join the fun in Schladming!

15TH NOVEMBER ONWARDS: CHRISTMAS MARKETS IN INNSBRUK AND VIENNA.
:bulletred: Imagine the lights of a Christmas tree rivalling with glistening tiles of the Golden Roof, the aroma of freshly made "Kiachln" (piping hot doughnuts laced with Sauerkaut) and the sound of Christmas carols. This is Christmas time in Innsbruck. Innsbruck's main shopping street will once again dazzle visitors with lights, glass and crystal. New stalls, modern Christmas light designs and an exciting range of souvenirs supplement the traditional Christmas market offerings in the heart of the town!

  22ND NOVEMBER ONWARDS: CHRISTMAS MARKETS IN SALZBURG AND INTERNATIONAL SKI COUNTDOWN.
:bulletred: The pealing of countless church bells reminds us that Christmas is near, and the Salzburg Christmas markets will fill you with warmth as you look out to the city's snow-covered roofs, domes and towers. A courtyard, a path lined by torches and an oversized Advent calendar are part of the Magic of Advent. Romantic booths, tempting treats and pre-Christmas gift ideas add to the charming atmosphere. Children can enjoy a sledge ride drawn by real reindeer, and an exciting entertainment programme between the orangery and the park will assure festive Advent afternoons at Hellbrunn Palace for all.
:bulletred: One of Austria's most popular resorts, Obertauern, is a winter hotspot for skiing and snowboarding. The International Ski Countdown celebrates the new ski season with a gigantic snow-bar, fireworks, an open-air festival and a large disco. Join in with this massive party in Obertauern!

23RD NOVEMBER: CHRISTMAS MARKETS IN GRAZ.
:bulletred: Enjoy the highlights of Advent in Graz, the capital city of Styria. Let yourself be enchanted by the romantic lights, the gleaming ice crib, the giant Rathaus Advent calendar and the spectacular Christmas Markets. As the chill of winter sets in, we huddle together for warmth. In front of Graz City Hall there is a welcoming village of stalls, offering traditional handicrafts and wonderful treats for the body and soul. The local festive tipple is "Feuerzangenbowle" - a blend of wine and rum set on fire - so no worries about keeping warm. To keep the kids entertained there is a much-loved children's carousel! (Also suitable for adults!)

14TH DECEMBER: SKI JUEWEL OPENING.
:bulletred: A new skiing experience with one ski pass launches this December! The ski resorts Alpbachtal and Wildschönau are joining forces under the name "Ski Juewel" , making them one of Tirol's Top 10 out of 82 ski resorts. Come do some skiing or snowboarding or just have a nice relaxing holiday in Alpbachtal, Wildschönau.

31ST DECEMBER: LE GRAND BAL IN VIENNA.
:bulletred: Seeing in the New Year in the staterooms of the imperial residence is one of the finest Hofburg traditions. The Hofburg Vienna invites you to a glittering night to remember in its imperial state rooms. NEW YEARS EVE



CELEBRATE WITH CELEBRATIONS IN VIENNA
:bulletred: This is for sure: At midnight you will hear famous Pummerin (St. Stephen's Cathedral) strike! Apart from that, everything can happen during the biggest celebration of the year. You can opt for an open-air party inclusive last minute waltz course all over Vienna's first district ('Silvesterpfad'), escape three-four time at various clubs (i.e. WUK, Passage, Flex,…) or celebrate in one of the many pubs at the 'Gürtel' (B72, rhiz, Chelsea,…) or at Bermuda triangle (i.e. krah krah, Bermudabräu, Brennerei,…).
Just before midnight you can watch the official fireworks, which are supported by considerable private efforts, illuminate the city!
You can also start this year's ball season with a banger, famous 'Kaiserball'. At the magnificent halls of the 'Hofburg' you first enjoy a splendid dinner and then mark the beginning of the new year in three-four time.
You mustn't miss famous 'Neujahrskonzert' the day after which is performed by the Viennese Philharmonic Orchestra and is broadcast on TV (ORF from 11 a.m., international stations from 12 a.m.)!
